Frequently Asked Questions Pertaining to Broken Sash Cords
Identifying Broken or Failing Sash Cords
Q: How do I know if my sash cords need replacing?
A: Classic signs are a sash that won’t stay open, drops or slams, lifts unevenly, feels very heavy, or visible frayed/broken cord at the pulley.
Q: I heard a “thud” in the frame, what was that?
A: That’s usually the counterweight dropping after a cord snaps. Stop using the window to avoid glass damage or injury.
Q: The window is sticking. Could it still be the cords?
A: Yes. Sticking can be paint build-up or swollen timber, but when you also feel uneven tension or lopsided travel, cords are likely worn.
Q: Do you match cord type?
A: We replace your broken sash cord with Nylon Cords. This is a more robust cord in comparison to the prior Waxed cotton cord. The waxed cotton cord is still great for regular windows, but it can stretch easier under tension when you have heavier windows due to size and the kind of glazing the window has.
Q: How long does sash cord replacement take?
A: Typically 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on access, paint build-up, how many cords and hardware condition.
Q: Do both cords need replacing if only one has failed?
A: We recommend replacing cords in pairs on the affected sash for balanced operation and longevity.
