Sash Ropes & Cords

Painted ropes become brittle and, like decayed cords, will eventually snap. At Sash Services, we fit high-quality sash cords designed for smooth, reliable operation.

Our Standard Sash Cords

We supply and fit waxed cotton cords with a polypropylene core:

  • Waxed outer protects the cotton and self-lubricates over the pulley wheel.
  • Polypropylene/nylon core provides inner strength and longevity.

These cords are ideal for typical domestic properties with sash windows and, with proper care, can last for generations.

Ropes for Period & Listed Properties

We can also supply and fit specialist ropes for heritage windows, including:

  • Pure white double-braided nylon
  • Red-fleck waxed cotton (often seen in historic properties)

Our team will recommend the most suitable cord to match your window’s age and style.

Care Tips: Keep Cords Free of Paint

It’s important to keep sash cords free from paint. When decorating, ask your decorator to apply a little Vaseline to the ropes before painting the frames. This simple step keeps ropes looking smart and moving freely.

Do I Need Cord Replacement or Rebalancing?

  • Windows won’t stay open (cords look intact) → likely needs rebalancing.
  • Frayed, brittle, or snapped cords → needs cord replacement.
